Can a mall have a can-do attitude?

Well, perhaps. Especially if it is The Gardens Mall, which from June 5-17, will host Canstruction 2017, with seven colorful, large-scale sculptures made from nonperishable food. Each of the sculptures will incorporate the number five in some form in recognition of the Palm Beach County Food Bank’s fifth anniversary. The sculptures will be available for public viewing during normal mall hours. “Canstruction is a fun event for the public, drawing attention to the very serious issue of hunger in our community,” said Palm Beach County Food Bank Executive Director Karen Erren. “With The Gardens Mall as our host and with Bank of America as our presenting sponsor, we have the opportunity to educate the public about hunger and help gather a significant amount of donated food which all goes to those in need locally.

One of our nation’s largest but least talked about issues is hunger — a problem that can affect anyone. Veterans, senior citizens, children, students and adults are all at risk of going hungry, and many of them do. Nationally, an estimated 49 million Americans, or 1 in 6, struggle regularly with “food insecurity,” which is defined as not knowing where the next meal is coming from. Nearly 20 percent of all U.S. households with children reported being food insecure; and between 2001 and 2013, the threat of hunger among seniors increased by 45 percent

Food Drive Again aids community

Thanks to the generosity of Palm Beach residents, nearly 1,600 pounds of food will be distributed to more than 203,000 people in the area who are in need. The fifth annual Empty Your Pantry Food Drive to benefit Palm Beach County Food Bank and CROS Ministries finished last month. donations to benefit the organizations’ food distribution programs. “The food drive allows us to stretch out further and help out more people,” said Brian Rowe, CROS Ministries’ director of food pantries. Food and cash donations ensure that their 19,400 clients receive the same staple, or necessary, items throughout their seven pantries.

Volunteers to make 115,000 meals for Feed Palm Beach County Day

Five hours. That’s how long the West Palm Beach Rotary Club and 400 volunteers have to assemble 115,000 meals for Feed Palm Beach County Day. From 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., volunteers will gather at Gaines Park Community Center to take bulk food and package it into healthy meals to feed locals who are starving in the community. Volunteering involves measuring, packing, sealing and assembling cases of meals, as well as dressing in masks and hair nets, according to the news release
